Seen and largely unnoticed, the “inner dialogue” of the wounded soul contributes greatly to the collective, exterior troubles of the world at large, which are really only symptoms of a much deeper problem. Doubt, anger, malice, sorrow, and fear are just a few of the spiritual trials that afflict the human heart. However, the Catholic tradition offers us sure-fire remedies—not to remove our trials, but to transform them by God’s grace into good, for ourselves and the world around us. This book presents valuable insight into how we can move through our spiritual trials and be renewed in faith, peace, mercy, joy, and love—for the good of all. This five-chapter book focuses on themes originally published as individual titles in our Catholic Perspectives CareNotes series. Softcover volume is edited by Br. Francis Wagner, O.S.B. and features an introduction.

Bad things happen to all people but we often ask why good people suffer and the wicked prosper. This is a very complex subject to which Ady tries to give some clarity. In this book “Through Trials To Triumph” he discusses the issue from a Biblical perspective and helps the reader to understand why trials happen to all of us. This book shows that life is a journey full of ups and downs. What we often perceive as a bad situation can be an opportunity for change and growth, but the key is "attitude and faith." How people deal with life’s trials depends on what attitude they have. God does not cause bad things to happen to us, but he allows them in our lives, and stands ready to help us through difficult times.

After a long battle with substance abuse, Telzia Thomas was blessed to find someone who believed in her and led her to the twelve-step program that set her free from a self-made prison. Telzia did not know, however, that her problems were far from over, as she was soon forced to grieve the loss of her mother and big brother, John, to battles with cancer. She mourned their absence, but more pain was yet to come when her husband fell ill with the same terrible disease. This tough time inspired Telzia to put her pain on the page, and so grew this honest, sometimes heartbreaking poetry collection, written in commemoration, but also as an uplifting tool to those going through similar misfortune. Caring for her daughter, a child with disabilities, opened Telzia’s eyes to all the amazing things her child was capable of—and that God was capable of, too. She eventually found the silence that allowed her to walk with Jesus and find peace away from the anticipation of death. Through turmoil, she found her closest friend: God the Father.

Invoking the biblical motif of Jacob's struggle with the Face of God (Genesis 32), Simon D. Podmore undertakes a constructive theological account of 'spiritual trial' (tentatio; known in German mystical and Lutheran tradition as Anfechtung) in relation to enduring questions of the otherness and hiddenness of God and the self, the problem of suffering and evil, the freedom of Spirit, and the anxious relationship between temptation and ordeal, fear and desire. This book traces a genealogy of spiritual trial from medieval German mystical theology, through Lutheran and Pietistic thought (Tauler; Luther; Arndt; Boehme), and reconstructs Kierkegaard's innovative yet under-examined recovery of the category (Anf¾gtelse: a Danish cognate for Anfechtung) within the modern context of the 'spiritless' decline of Christendom. Developing the relationship between struggle (Anfechtung) and release (Gelassenheit), Podmore proposes a Kierkegaardian theology of spiritual trial which elaborates the kenosis of the self before God in terms of Spirit's restless longing to rest transparently in God. Offering an original rehabilitation of the temptation of spiritual trial, this book strives for a renewed theological hermeneutic which speaks to the enduring human struggle to realise the unchanging love of God in the face of spiritual darkness.
