Non-profit social enterprises are a response to a confluence of factors occurring in the United States. Namely they work in response to a welfare reform system that has reduced or eliminated entitlement-based income assistance for poor individuals and families and a tightening non-profit funding environment at both the government and foundation levels. Social enterprises (often) provide job training while also employing trainees in their non-profit businesses, thereby crossing the boundary between capitalism and non-profit social services. This research looks at how a sample of four social enterprises in a large Midwestern U.S. city market their services and products, network with other social enterprises and engage with an increasingly globalized world. Specifically, social enterprises, rather than challenging the status quo, work within a larger ideology of market fundamentalism and neoliberal capitalist thought. The organizations rely on a rhetoric of self-sufficiency to describe the goals for both their clients and their own organizations. Simultaneously, they prioritize improvements in client self-esteem over particular job skills or job placements. Finally, social enterprises vary in their business practices between those that engage in mission-driven business and those that engage in profit-driven business. This research describes the contradictions that social enterprises face as they attempt to use the tools of capitalism to solve the problems of poverty and unemployment.
